Description

The city of Brockton announced a major investment to school infrastructure in 2011. Reliable Roofing & sheet metal was awarded a number of these projects as: Roofer and General Contractor.

The Davis and Raymond schools were identical projects. Both buildings required tear off of the existing roofing system, installation of new built up system, new flashings, wall panelling, translucent glass units, roof ladders, drains, mechanical unit curbs and GFI electrical outlets and structural steel improvements.

Due to the poor existing roof condition Brockton City was anxious to complete these projects in the shortest time-frame possible and while the school was occupied. Reliable Roofing & Sheet Metal facilitated this by mobilizing into 2 crews and working two shifts. The night crew tore off the existing roofing system and the day crew installed the new built up roofing system. The project was substantially completed in 3 months.

Planning

As the school remained occupied during construction it would be unsafe to perform some tasks such as skylight and window removal with school children beneath. To facilitate these works, classrooms under the work areas were relocated to temporary facilities in the gymnasium. Every step of the construction process was meticulously planned with the school management to relocate the classrooms with minimal disruption to staff and students.

There was also substantial planning to facilitate disconnects of the mechanical units. All the mechanical units were raised onto metal curbs and all the electrical unit supplies fitted with shut off switches. The mechanical and electrical disconnects could not be carried out during normal building hours as the air conditioning and other infrastructure would not work within the building. Reliable Roofing arranged for these works to be carried out at the weekends when the school was vacant.

The roofing systems included; aggregate set in a flood coat on cold process built up roof on tapered insulation.
